The Benazir Nashonuma Program is an intervention that attempts to transform the BISP into a motherhood program addressing the chronic malnourishment of mothers and children in Pakistan. Being a part of the government framework for social protection and overall poverty alleviation strategy, the program aims at pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under the age of two years belonging to low-income, poor households. This is a Conditional Cash Transfer program, requiring beneficiaries to fulfill certain health and nutrition conditions to be eligible to receive support. The program is designed to address one of Pakistan’s most urgent public health problems. The Nashonuma program empowers families with a combination of financial support, health check-ups, nutrition support, and awareness sessions to get away from the vicious cycle of poverty and ill health.

Financial and Health Benefits of Nashonuma
It provides a set of benefits to mothers and children by combining cash transfers with health and nutrition services. For mothers, there are quarterly payments of Rs. 2,000, while children receive Rs. 2,500 for girls and Rs. 3,000 for boys, thus motivating the family to give priority to child health and nutrition. Besides the cash transfer, other check-ups, growth monitoring, immunizations, and nutritious food packages aimed at fighting malnutrition and containing micronutrient deficiencies are provided. The program also requires that awareness sessions be organized on breastfeeding, hygiene, and sanitation. This integrated approach ensures that cash grants lead to positive health behaviours and outcomes, thereby reducing stunting, anemia, and low birth weight among the most vulnerable segments of the population in Pakistan.
Objectives of the Nashonuma Program
Preventing Stunting: The topmost goal of the program is reducing the high incidence of stunting in children under two, a condition that has long-term effects on physical and cognitive development.
Maternal Health: The program wants to contribute to healthier pregnancies and safer deliveries by promoting weight gain in pregnant women and addressing anemia and deficiencies in micronutrients.
Early Childhood Nutrition: There are special nutrient packages available for the program, and they encourage regular medical check-ups and immunizations for children, thus directly reducing disease burden and improving survival rates.
Awareness and Behavioral Change: Awareness sessions on hygiene, sanitation, and nutrition regularly empower these mothers and instill sustainable health practices in their families.
Scale and Reach: By May 2025, around 0.643 million mothers and children will have been enrolled, with a target of 1.5 million by the end of 2025. The program operates through 487 Facilitation Centers in 157 districts to leverage the outreach.
