Pakistan ranks among the top 5 countries in the world which are highly polluted. Lahore, the city of Punjab province of Pakistan was declared the most polluted city in the year 2025 and now according to 2025 rankings, Lahore is at the 2nd number in the world for its pollution. The reason is smog formed near winter throughout the year. But now CM Punjab has announced “CM Punjab Climate Leadership Development Internship Program” or “My Punjab Smog Free” to improve the polluted environment of Lahore and Punjab.
Smoke and Fog combine together to form smog which is highly dangerous for the environment and health. The smog is caused by the emissions from vehicles, industrial operations and the consumption of fossil fuels. It causes serious health issues such as cardiovascular diseases and respiratory issues.
Concerning its hazardous effects, the chief minister of punjab has taken the initiative to make the Punjab province free from smog named as “My Punjab Smog Free“. Maryam Aurangzeb who has been given the responsibility for dealing with the issues related to climate change, has organized a meeting to discuss about making an action plan to implement for making the punjab province free from smog.
Efforts for Environmental Protection
During the meeting, it was also discussed that the authorities of the wildlife, environment and fisheries departments will present measures to lessen smog. The collaboration between government and private sectors is necessary so Advisory Council for Environment is created for this purpose.
Changing Approach and Perspective
Before, the smog in punjab, particularly in Lahore was treated as a seasonal issue because of its appearance in winter. However, the government of punjab has changed its approach and perspective towards the smog issue by declaring it as a year-round epidemic which means that it is such an issue which is continuously spreading and exists throughout the year.
Now, because of this change in approach, the smog issue needs an urgent solution. The government of punjab proud of its management of the dengue epidemic, ensures that the smog issue will also be resolved completely because the Punjab Environment Protection and Climate Change Department is hard work to create plans for eradicating smog forever.
Strategies to Eradicate Smog
The government of punjab also ensured that the proper efforts for making punjab free from smog will start from September 2025 and up till now the strategies or plans decided for this purpose are,

- Launching e-bikes and e-buses
- Building up a proper waste management system

Budget for Project of “My Punjab Smog Free”
To implement the action plan and strategies devised, the government of punjab allotted a budget of 50 million rupees for this great initiative. The action plan is created by keeping in concerns its long-term and short-term effects.
CM’s Plan for “My Punjab Smog Free” Initiated by Senior Minister
Senior provisional minister of Lahore Maryum Aurangzeb states that the second phase of the chief minister for a My Punjab Smog Free focus on the harmful fumes released by automobiles. The decision has also been implying Modern computerized system for vehicle fitness certificates throughout Punjab.
She said that every automobile has an engine problem, and also that it releases smoke or carbon emissions, will be examined and given a QR code. The chief minister has requested strict enforcement. To reduce smoke related pollution every automobile has a unique QR code that will be updated every year. Technological devices and cameras from safe cities are being utilized to closely monitor care that are releasing smoke.
According to Maryum Aurangzeb Maryum Nawaz Sharif developed a strategy for clearing the whole state of Punjab from smog. The strategy is about to overcome the poisonous smog which releases through vehicles, burning Waste, plastic bags, and industry kilns. As an outcome there have been significant improvements in the controlling of smoke emissions from moving cars.
Maryum Aurangzeb states that the vehicle fitness certificates would be checked by the environmental projection agency, law enforcement and traffic officials. Along with the instructions stricter enforcement of traffic laws, the Punjab government is also increasing the rate of fines throughout the province.
To improve the environment she pointed out, severe actions were being taken against vehicles that create poisonous smoke in the atmosphere. The chief minister has praised law enforcement, traffic wardens, and the EPA for their successful attempts to stop smoke emitting cars.
